Cytology tests are performed on animals in order to make a faster and more reliable diagnosis. Cytology is a test based on the laboratory evaluation of cells.
During cytology, samples can be taken from the skin, joints, peritoneal and pleural cavities, trachea, bronchi, vagina, bone marrow, cerebrospinal fluid, ear, throat, foreskin and conjunctiva of the eye.
The vast majority of cytological examinations are trouble-free for the patient, mainly because they can be performed without anesthesia or even sedation. In addition, it is a control that allows you to get a diagnosis quickly, practically in every veterinary office.
A special type of cytological examination is the examination of vaginal smears, allowing to control changes in the concentration of hormones, causing changes in the vaginal epithelium. This allows e.g. to determine the pet's menstrual cycle phase, which can be very useful for owners who are interested in breeding.
